 Happy Halloween Everyone!

35 years later…

Well on October 27th I reached another year in my martial arts and physical conditioning training, 35 years of straight out training! I can’t say when I first got interested in the martial arts, but I can remember at a 4th grade book fair picking up Bruce Tegner’s book on Jujutsu. One of school friends and I would practice the moves in the back of the playground everyday at recess , well until the teachers decided it wasn’t too safe to be taking each other down on the pavement!

It has been a long run training and I have been extremely lucky to have been able to meet, discuss and train with masters from a variety of styles over the years, and for that I thank them all for sharing with me.

A few things I have learned along the way:

1)      Never stop learning, everyone can offer something you can add to your training repertoire.

2)      Never stop training. Once you stop, it is very difficult to get the momentum back, life will get in the way and you will fall off the training path.

3)      Step outside your box. If you are a traditional practitioner go try a modern combative art, if you are a Filipino practitioner go seek out a boxing instructor and so on and so on. Expand your knowledge (see #1)

4)      There is no easy way to mastery. The simplest path is consistent hard physical training. It could be one on one sparring and banging sessions, or hitting the weights with aggressive intent, whichever endeavor you are chasing serious hard training sessions have to be a regular part of you r training regimen.

5)      Your worst enemy is yourself. This one is the hardest one for newbies and old timers alike, because it violates the EGO!  Your self conscious mind is always there telling you how good or bad you are, but  understanding and gaining mastery over your thought patterns and directing them to a particular success is extremely difficult. Why do think not everyone achieves high levels of skill or success in life? So, be honest and self reflective know thyself!

Alright, so here are 5 tips from a long time player in the world of the martial arts and physical conditioning (oh yeah I have a lot more but those will come out later in one of my published books (stay tuned for those releases).  Along the training path, I have had my ups and downs, bruises and bruised ego, but I have persevered and kept going. So in a few minutes, I am off to train do some solo training, stretching, conditioning etc, tomorrow I will be training with students and friends, Sunday well maybe I might need to heal up a bit!! But I think you are getting my point keep training and moving forward.

A few weeks ago, I had the great opportunity to head over and teach a few segments at Terry Dow’s Martial Arts Symposium and I have to say it was fantastic. First a huge thank you to Sensei Terry for throwing this event again and inviting me to teach a few sessions. Second, it was awesome to watch such talented young martial artists to be working so hard with all of us “old grizzled veterans”! Catching up with past friends and masters such as Bill Wallace, Michael DePasquale, Tony Annessei, Dave Lamattina etc. etc. , never mind the many, many new friends I made at this event. Great times!!

Actually I was able to teach two segments: the first focused on grappling (Catch, Shooto, and Silat) the second segment was close quarter stick fighting. I would like to thank Bryan A.(for letting me punch him in the face..) and Todd S, for twisting him into a pretzel, as well as all those who came over and trained. Lots of open minds in my group and they asked tons of questions, filmed techniques and kept pushing for more! Both sessions were well received and definitely opened some eyes as to new ideas to add to their training. I hope to keep attending this event each year as it always excites and motivates me to keep on training and learning new things. (which leads into the next article)

Lots of great material in this issue and I hope you enjoy it. Keep the feedback coming in to me as it stimulates the ideas for upcoming newsletters, videos, and articles, so sit back and keep on reading. For those of you who received this quick brief as part of the last newsletter, get ready as the next issue will be packed with training information and GPP routines!
