The Innocuous Walking Stick

When you see someone walking down the street utilizing a cane or walking stick, what is the first thing that comes to your mind? If you are the majority of people, you see that person as potentially having some type of disability, or injury that is causing him/her to use a cane to help them remain mobile and active. I look at it a little differently…that cane or walking stick is a great tool for self-protection!

A walking stick is the most innocuous tool for self-protection, and to add to it’s list of benefit’s it is very, very legal to have one in your possession on the street. The walking stick has it’s roots in many cultures and martial arts. From the Samurai arts of hanbojutsu, to the streets of Paris (La Canne), even in England (Walking Stick) has been used and taught as a weapon of self-defense for hundreds of years. Principles & Tactics of Personal Defense

Why did you start training in the martial arts? If you are like the majority of us, it was for one of two reasons. One, self-defense, and two, personal improvement (health, flexibility etc). When I started training many (too many) years ago, it was to be able to kick butt. I didn’t care about physical fitness, I had seen David Carradine, defeat his opponents on T.V. and I wanted to be able to do the same. I can even remember purchasing a Bruce Tegner book on Jujutsu, and practicing in the schoolyard with one of my friends. We weren’t interested in anything other than being able to protect ourselves from the local class bullies. Well, I’m older and wiser now and I am still looking to gain more self-defense skills. This quest has lead to continuously searching and the testing of skills, tactics, and techniques that make up Combative Concepts. (more…)
